AbstractThe Camamu-Almada Basin (CAB) is located along the Eastern Brazilian coast with great potential for oil exploration. The dynamics of the ocean currents in CAB is complex and presents a set of eddies influenced by variations of the South Equatorial Current Bifurcation. At the present, there are only shallow water oil and gas fields in this basin and the oil production in deepwater has been subject of discussion, as CAB is near to the largest and richest coral reefs in Brazil: the Abrolhos Coral Reefs. Therefore, studying the oil behavior from spills in this region is fundamental to evaluate the possible affected areas. In this work, a system of Lagrangian numerical models was used to simulate the dynamics of the oil in CAB. This system can be used to simulate oil and gas blowouts from deepwater and oil spills at surface. The oil releases were simulated from deepwater in two different locations in CAB, but the characteristics of the blowouts, such as kind of oil, discharge, and duration, were the same. The results showed the oil moving in different directions along the water column, influenced by the ocean conditions. In both experiments, the oil reached the surface. At the surface, the dynamics of the slick was controlled by the formation of eddies and meanders, in particular the Ilhéus Eddy, and by a wind blowing from East, which transported the oil towards the shore.
